A new report from Health Canada’s Canadian Substance Use Survey (CSUS) 2023 shows that psychedelic use has surged across Canada, especially among young adults.

*5.9% of Canadians (1.93 million people) reported using psychedelics in the past year-a 195% increase from 2019.

*MDMA use jumped 80%, from 353,000 people in 2019 to 589,000 in 2023.

*22.9% of young adults (15-24) reported using psychedelics-more than twice the rate of older adults. Yet, for those who need them most, access remains slow, bureaucratic, and restricted.

In 2023, 106 Canadians were approved for legal psilocybin therapy through the Special Access Program (SAP). The application process is so restrictive-requiring patients to try multiple antidepressants, sometimes even electroconvulsive therapy-that many never even apply.

As more Canadians turn to psychedelics, why is it still so hard for people with terminal cancer and severe mental health conditions to access them legally?
