Canada’s Pivotal Role in Psychedelic Healthcare

How we can lead the way in MDMA-assisted psychotherapy

Dear TheraPsil Community,

As you may have seen recently, the FDA rejected the approval of MDMA as a treatment for PTSD, citing “significant limitations” in the data provided by Lykos Therapeutics, meaning the potential approval of MDMA in the United States could be delayed for several years.

While this decision represents a significant setback in the U.S., it presents a unique opportunity for Canada.

Our team wanted to address this situation from a positive perspective and highlight how Canadians can drive the advancement of MDMA treatments:

Canada’s Opportunity to Lead

Canada has a strong tradition of leadership in healthcare and is perfectly positioned to advance the field of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies. Now is the time for our nation to set a global standard.

Unlike the U.S., we are not bound by the constraints of the FDA’s decision-making process. Health Canada and our Federal leaders have the chance to take decisive action by collaborating with organizations like TheraPsil to establish rigorous standards and regulations for psychedelic treatments. By advancing research, standardizing training, and expanding access to MDMA therapy, Canada can establish itself as a global leader in this transformative field.

Remember, MDMA’s available!

MDMA is already legally available in Canada through Health Canada’s Special Access Program (SAP). This legal framework provides us with a solid foundation to lead the way in psychedelic-assisted therapies. With MDMA accessible through the SAP, we are in a prime position to further develop and integrate this promising treatment into mainstream healthcare.

The Time is Now

The November ’23 Senate report titled The Time is Now urges the several Federal departments to conduct a major research program on psychedelics for treating PTSD, highlighting the need for immediate action. The report underscores that Canada must seize the moment and not lag behind other countries like Australia, which has already authorized MDMA and psilocybin for medical use. The time for Canada to lead in this field is now.

What TheraPsil is Doing:

1. Expanding MDMA Training:
We launched our MDMA-assisted psychotherapy training program in Vancouver in February 2024, with the third cohort starting in September. We are committed to expanding this training across Canada to ensure healthcare professionals are well-prepared to offer MDMA therapy. This effort responds to the call for standardization, and we aim to collaborate with Canadian leaders to ensure high-quality, regulated training and treatment.

2. Advocating for Progressive Policies:
TheraPsil is actively working to establish a regulatory framework that empowers doctors as the primary decision-makers in patient care. We are advocating for policies that remove barriers to psychedelic therapy and support a compassionate, patient-centred approach.

3. Raising Public Awareness:
Our outreach and campaigns emphasize the benefits of MDMA and other psychedelics, showcasing their potential where traditional therapies have not succeeded. We are dedicated to increasing public understanding and acceptance of these innovative treatments.

Thank you for your continued support and I hope this message brings some hope in these challenging times for psychedelic therapy!

Sincerely,
John Gilchrist
